Multimedia Research Group, Inc. has published a report about IPTV video quality and the quality of the IPTV experience. This report, available from the company's web site, details the issues facing IPTV operators as they receive increased competition from cable and satellite providers. According to the report, video quality is a crucial differentiator in attracting and maintaining customers. However, due to the complexities of delivering video over IP, there are a number of crucial parts of the IPTV systems that can compromise the consumer's Quality of Experience (QoE).
According to the company's press release:
The new report from MRG, Inc., "IPTV Video Quality: QoS and QoE - 2006," addresses this complexity by focusing on seven "domains of influence" in the video value chain, and by honing in on any one of them to expose the best practices for identifying and solving QoS (Quality of Service) problems. By using quantitative measurements for addressing QoS issues, and subjective/qualitative measurements for QoE, the report provides linkage between both dimensions of quality control.
With IPTV and other IP-based services, QoE is THE differentiating factor for customer retentation and referrals. As more companies deliver bundled services - voice, video, data, and mobile - competition will force providers to lower prices or offer better service as a differentiator. An end-to-end converged service assurance solution will be required to maintain a competitive edge based on quality.
